Search Electronic Stores or Place an Order - Advice for Project Students

Materials and Components to support the ELECTRONICS element of Projects

Many electronic components for use in individual and team projects are freely available from the Electronics Components Store (ECS), Rankine Building room 712C. Please check the store (menu button on the left) before you order anything. The stores webpages are about to be modernised and updated so although they give a good indication of stock held, a visit to the store to check is advised. Technical staff in the adjacent Electronics Workshop can advise on the suitability of various store items for your project.

If some of the items you need are not stocked in the store you can order from University contracted suppliers using the web order form (left).

Contracted Suppliers:
Onecall (Farnell/CPC)
Rapid Electronics
RS Components

Delivery times do vary, but orders placed by 2pm are usually delivered within 24 – 48hrs, if in stock.

Contracted suppliers are able to supply in small quantities, mostly with next day delivery. Other suppliers can have large minimum order quantities and delivery times may run to weeks. With this in mind try not to just 'Google' for some exotic function you need and order it from the first supplier that appears. Search the contracted suppliers' websites to find something that can do the same job.

Where a component cannot be sourced from one of the contracted suppliers it is permissible to order it from elsewhere but Ebay orders cannot be supported.

Orders to the USA and other countries should be avoided where possible, as delivery charges are often more than the order value. Customs can impose import duty and taxes that result in additional cost and delays.

Undergraduate and MSc projects students don't need a budget code, the order will be funded from the appropriate teaching budget.

The teaching budgets are provided specifically to support teaching projects which means that orders for items that are judged to be unreasonable, taking into consideration the project nature, and whether it is a team or individual one, may be questioned or rejected. Orders for items that are intended to support research should be funded from research group budgets.

Materials and Components to support the MECHANICAL element of Projects

Mechanical materials and components cover a very broad range and may need to be sourced in specific sizes and quantities from specialist suppliers. Discuss your needs with technical staff in the Mechanical Workshop, Rankine Building level 3, beside the passenger lift. Wherever possible they will provide you with what you require from the Mechanical Store, or place orders with appropriate suppliers for anything that isn't stocked.
